OF TECHNOLOGY Pasadena, CA Instrument Specialist (Temporary) - CIT15573VC Summary The Caltech Seismo Lab seeks an instrument specialist/electronic technician to participate in the upgrade and operation of the Caltech/ USGS southern California earthquake monitoring network (SCSN/CISN). The duties include field work and laboratory work for implementation and maintenance of seismic sensors, dataloggers, digital data communications for seismic telemetry, including spread-spectrum radios, satellite systems, cell-phone modems, 3G modems, DSL, Frame Relay, and the Internet. The successful candidate will work with a team to ensure efficient and reliable operations. This position is ideal for individuals who like the outdoors, traveling, and who would like to apply their technical skills and carry out field work across southern California. This is a temporary position with funding available for approximately for two years. The position is renewable if additional funding becomes available. Job Duties 1. Work with the SCSN field team to perform technical field work at remote seismic stations in southern California. 2. Prepare equipment for field deployment, including testing the performance of individual components. 3. Troubleshoot various aspects of the seismic station equipment, and data communication links. 4. Work with the team to verify instrument calibrations such as sensor gain, orientation, and polarities, and identification of malfunctioning sensors or other equipment. 5. Perform all other duties as assigned, including varied technical assignments requiring the use of standard scientific principles, techniques, and process. Basic Qualifications: 1. Associate degree or equivalent in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field and at least three years of experience in electronic and mechanical troubleshooting. 2. Valid California driver's license. Ability to drive a 4 wheel drive vehicle. 3. Be able to perform field work and carry heavy loads, sometimes under adverse conditions. Ability to lift 25 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs. 4. Experience with diverse data communications hardware and transmission media such as routers, terminal servers, spread spectrum radio, DSL, Frame Relay, VPN, and cellular communications. 5. Experience with using and writing scripts for UNIX or Linux and Windows computers. 6. Excellent project management and interpersonal communication skills and must also be self-motivated and capable of problem-solving, both individually (unsupervised) and as a team member. 7. A pre-employment background check and post-offer physical exam are required. Preferred Qualifications: 1. Diversity of electronic and mechanical troubleshooting skills desirable. This would include experience with electronic test equipment (Volt-ohm meter, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, LAN tester, etc.), analog-to-digital conversion dataloggers, RF data transmission, electronic cable construction, and data communications networking skills. 2. Experience working with seismic sensors, and dataloggers in field situations. 3. Demonstrate a high level of initiative and interest in field work, and self-motivated problem-solving under adverse field conditions. 4.
